There are many different types of coatings available on the market to protect your boat, including wax, sealant, and ceramic coating. With ceramic coatings becoming more and more popular in the marine industry, many individual people, as well as companies, started to provide a service for ceramic clear coat for boats as an alternative for the other yacht protection methods. Whether you choose to take the DIY approach or count on a professional detailer, it’s important to know the consequences for improperly ceramic coating your yacht.

Applying Ceramic Coating on a Boat

There are two options you can choose to apply ceramic coating to your boat – DIY kits or professional application. Whether you choose one or the other, the yacht polishing process shall remain the same. First, your vessel needs to be washed thoroughly and completely decontaminated. Paint polishing the boat comes next, followed by another wash and decontamination. After the boat is dried, it should be pre-coated. The ceramic coat is then applied by hand, buffed off, and sits until it’s ready for the next coat. After all the coats are applied, usually two, the boat cannot go in the water for a certain amount of time, typically a day.

Consequences for Applying Ceramic Coat the Wrong Way

If there was no yacht paint rejuvenation or correction applied before ceramic coating your yacht, the top coat will not be in its best condition. At Deep End, we recommend a paint correction prior to installing our ORCA coating. Even if you have a brand-new boat, there may be paint issues due to improper care at the manufacturer or the dealership. The surface of the vessel needs extensive preparation in order for the topcoat to be secured properly.

The ceramic coating must also be optimized for marine use. If you or a “professional” attempt to apply a coating that is not marine grade, it may not be strong enough to withstand the harsh conditions of the sun and sea.

One of the most important things to remember is that you must maintain your boat and its coat. If you don’t continue to maintain your yacht, chances are the coat will start to dull and suffer from abrasions.

Reapplying Ceramic Coat

Many competitors of Deep End suggest reapplication after a year, two, or three, but at Deep End, our ORCA System is a proprietary, quality-control-enforced, data-driven, high-performance yacht polishing process for acrylic and linear polyurethane, as well as gelcoat. This system is proven and extends your yacht paint beyond the 10-year paint guarantee.
